{"id":4046,"date":"2019-05-15T09:03:49","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T07:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.visitcaldes.cat\/els-bandolers-el-cami-ral-i-la-creu-de-la-ma\/"},"modified":"2020-05-06T12:44:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T10:44:14","slug":"bandits-the-royal-way-and-the-cross-of-the-hand","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.visitcaldes.cat\/en\/bandits-the-royal-way-and-the-cross-of-the-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Bandits, the Royal Way  and the Cross of the Hand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Els bandolers, el cam\u00ed ral i la creu de la m\u00e0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Royal Way was the most important communication route between France and Barcelona, and on its passage through Caldes it forked into two paths, the inland one and the sea one, at the point that is called La Cruz de la Mano (The Cross of the Hand).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cTHE MOST DANGEROUS FORESTS IN THE COUNTRY\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is what the traveller Thomas Platter in the 16th century called the forests of La Thiona and La Cruz de la Mano, as he travelled the Royal Way. Subsequent descriptions are not much kinder; the best ones talk of \u201csolitude\u201d and almost always of \u201cdeep forests\u201d and \u201cthick cork oak groves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>n 1842, Pi i Margall made reference to an event burned into the memory of the place and narrated an event involving bandits who would pretend to be innkeepers: \u201cUpon leaving this fatal house, the traveller often walked to a quick and inevitable death\u2026 the victim was delivered to the very executioner who had to escort them to the place of sacrifice. This sequence of events was horrible.\u201d<br \/>\nPrudenci Bertrana in Proses b\u00e0rbares:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere, in olden days, the way became dangerous for the wayfarer; from that point, the way was infested with daring and cruel thieves and blunderbuss gangs, who would kidnap, steal and attack those who did as they pleased \u2026 Specifically, the Cruz de la Mano did not look very calming \u2026 which of the two ways should have been taken? (\u2026) it would have made no difference. Whichever route was chosen by the undecided traveller\u2026 the same aridness, the same low morale, the same succession of thick forests and imposing places awaited them, whose appearance promised nothing good\u2026 there was nothing else for it but to hand themself over to fate in body and soul.\u201d For them, the \u201cM\u201d that crowned the Cruz de la Mano did not designate the sea way (marino), but rather death (muerte) and martyrdom (martirio).
